Katrin's Newsletter #32: I'm interviewing Ros Brackenbury, Aug 7
This brief missive is a way for me to make connections with people interested in art and creativity (sign up here). I'm an author and editor, always on the lookout for inspiration.
Join me for my first ever hosting gig!
For a few years, I worked as a behind-the-scenes gopher on NPR talk shows in Washington DC, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago. The shows were driven by the personalities of the hosts - super smart and self-involved - and it was fascinating being part of a team trying to create good radio, day after day.
Now - decades later - the tables are turned, and I'll be hosting an author talk, tomorrow, Friday August 7 at 6pm. I'll be chatting with Rosalind Brackenbury, author of WITHOUT HER, for Books & Books Key West. You can sign up here. Ros is British and has been living in Key West for 25 years. She's an impressive creative force.

Are you tired of virtual events? This one will be short and sweet and, I hope, livelier than usual (I'm big on accidentally making hilarious facial expressions).
But, seriously, the book is fabulous. Friendship, loyalty, sex, aging, and a missing person all wrapped up in luscious French countryside and even more luscious prose... what more could you want?

What a CRAZY time, it must be acknowledged, yet again. I sincerely hope you are all safe, wearing masks, and helping build healthy communities in which everyone feels welcome.
I'm on the East Coast for the summer, really enjoying being with my kids. They were alone in our family home in Boston during lockdown, so it's special to have this time together. We've had lots of family dinners, shared plenty of "drinky poos" (my son Peter's term), and watched movies projected onto the side of the house.
I'm working on my next novel and teaching again. The writing is slow going, but it IS happening, mainly thanks to my amazing GrubStreet community who cheer me on via Slack. This fall, I'll be teaching again. (I didn't realize how much I missed it!) I'm offering a one-day class on #firstpages, as well as a six-week class on revising your novel. More details soon.
Meanwhile, if you're a writer struggling with the opening of your book, I'd be happy to help you with my #firstfivepages service. Check it out here. This service is free to writers of color, please spread the word!
