Katrin's Newsletter #35: Here's to NEW BEGINNINGS
This brief missive is a way for me to make connections with people interested in art and creativity (sign up here). I'm an author and editor, always on the lookout for inspiration.
"Doomscrolling" has to be one of my favorite new words. It is so perfect.
During this pandemic, I've been guilty of desperately searching social media for something that might give me comfort, or fuel my outrage. Most of the time, I come away feeling depleted, except for this: discovering art on Instagram has been one of my greatest joys these past ten months.
I love to rip pictures out of magazines and hang them by my desk for inspiration while I write. After tearing the above image out of the NYT Magazine, I looked up the artists Laci Jordan and Kriss Munsya and tagged them on an IG story. We had a little conversation, and I got the chance to tell them how much I admire their work.
A writer friend of mine, Maggie Levine, started posting art under the tag @artwritedaily as inspiration to writers and teachers (she also has a killer newsletter).
There, I discovered more incredible artists. Jenna Gribbon's painting "Cuddle Puddle" reminds me of Klimt: so tender and bold.
Charly Palmer's work bursts with dignity and energy that I find incredibly galvanizing.
I also found Mary Breneman's artwork and am embarrassed to admit (because I am a cheapskate) that when she began offering astonishing paintings at even more astonishing prices during the pandemic, I bought THREE of them (including this one) despite having zero wall space.
I'd love to see some of the art you love. Email me here!
On Sunday, I'm heading off alone for two weeks of intensive editing on novel #3. I've been trying to do this for a year and am so grateful to have the opportunity.
For those of you wishing for time alone, or time together, or inspiration, or momentum, I wish you all of that and more in the coming year.
Here's to new beginnings!
