I love designing new classes. I’ve been running generative workshops focused on productivity, and now I’m ready to hone in on craft: instead of always working on more, more, MORE, let’s start thinking about BETTER.
For spring, I’ve developed a workshop that involves textual analysis (I’ve loved doing that kind of deep dive since I was in high school) as well as writing prompts and lively discussion. AND YOU GET WRITTEN FEEDBACK FROM ME ON A REVISED PIECE OF WRITING. (Yes, that’s worth shouting about.)
Working in community with other writers who want to improve their storytelling is such a balm to a weary soul. Consider joining me on this next journey - six Thursdays from 5:30 - 7:30pm EST, starting next month. Class size is limited, registration is now open. Detailed information below.
Feel free to email me with any questions. I’d love to see some new faces.
Craft Intensive - a new online writing workshop
Bestselling author Katrin Schumann is offering a workshop on craft, which includes revision guidance and personalized critiques, to help you elevate your work and stand out in a crowded market.
Classes run on six consecutive Thursdays from 5:30 -7:30 pm EST,
March 13 - April 17, 2025.
Are you ready to hone your understanding of key craft elements in order to take your writing to the next level?
For newer writers, this class will help you build a strong foundation for your work, introducing you to five critical elements of craft through deep textual analysis of short excerpts from published writing. For more experienced writers it offers an intensive refresher that is critical to the kind of thoughtful editing you must do in preparation for pitching your story to agents or editors.
Before class launches, you will submit ten pages of your story or book in progress to the instructor. In the week before the final class, you’ll revise those pages using the knowledge you’ve gained during class and resubmit them. After the workshop, the instructor will offer written feedback of your pages (there is no workshopping during class).
During this workshop, you will:
dive into a different craft element each week, including characterization, dialogue, voice, setting and structure
read and discuss excerpts from a variety of successful published work to help you see those craft elements in action
generate new writing based on in-class prompts, or edit existing work
learn revision strategies – and put those techniques into practice
receive thoughtful written feedback on a polished piece of writing (up to ten pages, double spaced)
be part of a writing community, developing momentum for your project and confidence in your abilities.
Come expecting to share your ideas and questions in spirited conversations. This craft intensive is open to fiction (short story, novel) and memoir writers, and is suitable for all levels. Class size is limited; apply now to save your spot.
The cost is $520 for six sessions, and includes individualized written feedback on your work.
From Katrin:
“Writers are often daunted by the idea of 'polishing' their work. What should I focus on? How do I know what is or isn’t working? They spend too much time moving around commas or worrying about adverbs when they should be looking at how characters come to life and then change, how to deepen meaning by finessing setting and imagery, and whether the dialogue has sufficient purpose and subtext. Addressing pacing issues can also be challenging!
In my classes I am rigorous and encouraging, and my primary goal is to give you the support and tools you need to do your best work.”
