A bit of tension is always appreciated in a beautifully set scene - I think they both are necessary for me at least as I’m a bit of a distracted reader who also appreciates poetic and visual sets so throwing crumbs towards a carefully laid tension or mystery gets me through books more easily
This is a great way of putting it. Pursuing the desire - whether it will be achieved or not - creates tension. Tension makes readers want to know what’s going to happen = turning pages. Often more literary writers see that seeding of desire as kind of artificial, but I’ve come to understand readers appreciate it.
I love second hand shops too! I always think of my grandmother who would bring back ‘treasures’ from the ‘secunditas’ as they are called in Chile. The writing process is so interesting -thanks for sharing it with us :)
When I was considering titles for the post, I keep thinking "boobs, boobs," but I just couldn't come up with something appropriate lol. It is a GREAT museum. Can't wait to see what happens inside there in your next novel.

The Soane's museum was my favorite when I was in London. I have a scene set there in my upcoming book! Also that boobie statue is Diana of Ephesus, and there is a fantastic working fountain of her at Villa D'Este in Tivoli. https://www.unaguidaturisticaroma.com/en/blog2/post/28147/la-diana-di-efeso-a-villa-deste-a-tivoli

Very helpful, Katrin! I think I'll order Sarah Waters's book...
